Blog Grading Rubric

Each blog entry will be submitted as a draft in the Boston Globe’s blog tool.  Once you file it as a draft, you must let me know it’s available to be looked at.  Each blog entry gets one edit from me.  You are able to take my comments and revise your entry for submission.  The revised entry must be submitted within 24 hours of my comments being received.  That is the version that will be graded.

We will start blogging during Week 4 and at that point I will post a schedule.

Your final blog grade will be based on several different factors, including the following: Each blog post will be worth 20 points and will be graded on the following criteria:

Blog Concept:

A’ Work (5 points):  Is there a specific focus, and does the student stick to it?    Does the focus makes sense and is it an interesting idea?  Publishable.

‘B’ Work (4 points): The blog is pretty focused but there are some points that seem off-focus. There might be some concerns regarding the topic.  Might be publishable.

‘C’ Work (3 points):  Concept could use some more development but it has potential.  Probably not publishable.

‘D’ or below (0-2 points):  Concept has problems. It is way too broad or offers no take on any particular subject.  Not publishable.

‘C’ Work (3 points): Poor or improper linking (links don’t work); links are not embedded. Only 1-2 links; no photos or multimedia.

Blog Posts:

‘A’ Work (5 points): Is content appropriate, meaningful? Are they proper length? Well cited? Do they vary their sources, medium?  Interesting stuff. Great commentary; some primary reporting; good variety of content.  Pulbishable.

‘B’ Work (4 points): Good variety of content. Post may be too long or too short; sources a little weaker.  Likely publishable.

‘C’ Work ( 3 points): Not strongly written or reported but there is stuff here to read.  Likely not publishable.

‘D’ or below (0-2 points):    Pretty light on content, no substantial information, perhaps just a bunch of links. Adds nothing new to the blogosphere.  Not publishable.
